What is Honeycomb?
What is honeycomb?
It is a mass of hexagonal wax cells built by honey bees.
What is honeycomb for?
It is the honey bees hive, where they store honey/pollen and use as nests for eggs/larvae.
When Ernie, the Bee Man, gave me some honeycomb to photograph, I was amazed at the patterns, the intricate ways the honeycomb is formed, and also the different colors. Which led me to research WHY and WHAT are the different colors of honeycomb?
This is what I found out, the dark honeycomb, also known as BROOD comb, is dark due to the many cocoons embedded in the cells. Another contributing factor for the dark color is travel stains. Travel stains are the tracking of many feet (bee that is) over time.
More to come on honeycomb education!
